The Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, on Saturday ordered the dissolution of the Sharia panel established at the Central Mosque in the community.
The monarch emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of peaceful coexistence among residents of diverse faiths and to uphold the rule of law.
The announcement was made during a crucial meeting held at the Ewi’s Palace in Ado Ekiti, which was attended by prominent community leaders, chiefs, and key Muslim stakeholders. Among those present were the Chief Imam of Ado Ekiti and the President of the League of Imams and Alfas in the Southwest, Edo, and Delta states, Sheik Jamiu Kewulere, along with other notable Muslim leaders.
The gathering was convened in response to growing concerns and tensions arising from the establishment of the Sharia panel. Oba Adejugbe highlighted the need for unity and mutual respect within the community, stressing that decisions that could create divisions or disrupt law and order must be avoided.
The dissolution of the panel comes just two days after the Ekiti State Government publicly stated that the existing legal framework in the state does not recognize Sharia Courts or Sharia Arbitration. The government clarified that all matters of dispute resolution within the state must align with its constitutionally recognized judicial structures.
The Ewi’s intervention accentuates his commitment to fostering peace and ensuring that all residents of Ado Ekiti, irrespective of their religious beliefs, live in harmony. He urged all community members to channel their grievances through appropriate, legally recognized mechanisms while reiterating his dedication to safeguarding the unity of the town.
This development has been widely lauded as a proactive step towards averting potential conflicts and preserving the age-long tradition of communal peace in Ado Ekiti. Residents and leaders alike have been called upon to support the monarch’s efforts to maintain stability and uphold the rule of law.
