Federal Government Discloses When Minimum Wage Will Be Reviewed

The Nigerian government has announced a significant shift in its minimum wage review policy.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made this known on Thursday in Abia State. She emphasized that the decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to a more frequent review cycle.

“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever. It used to be about five years, but now, in three years’ time, which is less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” she explained.

Recall, President Tinubu had approved a N70,000 minimum wage last year, with a pledge to revisit it every three years. The new wage officially took effect on July 29, 2024, following an agreement with the Labour Union.

However, the Trade Union Congress has called for annual reviews, citing the persistent rise in inflation as a pressing concern for workers nationwide.
