…Nigerian-American Oye Owolewa Re-Elected as DC Shadow Representative, Continues Push for Statehood..

Nigerian-American Democrat, Oye Owolewa, has been re-elected as the Shadow Representative for the District of Columbia (DC), strengthening his advocacy for the district’s interests and its statehood aspirations.

Owolewa first made history in November 2020, becoming the first Nigerian-American elected to the U.S. Congress. Although his role as a Shadow Representative is not officially recognized by the U.S. government as a full congressional seat, Owolewa garnered strong support from the DC electorate, securing 164,026 votes—82.84 percent of the total votes cast in the District of Columbia.

Despite the limitations of his position, Owolewa has remained committed to representing the residents of DC. His work is centered on advocating for full congressional representation and the rights of the district’s residents, who currently lack voting power at the federal level.

In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, Owolewa expressed gratitude to DC voters for their unwavering support. “Thank you DC again for giving me a chance to serve. I also want to thank the organizations that have supported, partnered with and endorsed me,” he wrote.

Shadow Representatives, while not holding voting power in the U.S. House of Representatives, play a vital role in amplifying the call for DC statehood. They work to address the unique disenfranchisement faced by DC residents who lack federal voting representation. Owolewa’s re-election accentuates his steadfast commitment to advancing this cause, making DC statehood a central focus of his advocacy.
