N-Power Beneficiaries Submit Petition to New Minister Over Unpaid Stipends

…N-Power Beneficiaries Submit Petition to New Minister Over Unpaid Stipends…

A group of beneficiaries under Nigeria’s N-Power programme has written a petition to Nentawe Yilwatda, the newly appointed Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, seeking payment of unpaid stipends covering the period from October 2022 to September 2023.

The request, detailed in a letter signed by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju on behalf of the petitioners, was addressed to the minister. Dated November 5, 2024, the letter was titled, “Demand for Payment of Outstanding Salaries of N-Power Beneficiaries from October 2022 to September 2023.”

Representing beneficiaries including Adeshina Adex, Adeyanju stated, “We are solicitors to Adeshina Adex, and several others (hereinafter referred to as our clients) on whose instructions we act.”

The letter detailed the grievances of the N-Power participants, explaining that the beneficiaries had adhered to all programme requirements, working diligently in their assigned placements throughout the 12-month period. “It is our clients’ information that they registered for the N-Power programme and were deployed to their places of primary assignment for a period of 12 months, from October 2022 to September 2023. Having fulfilled all obligations and upheld their commitments to the N-Power programme and investing time and effort in good faith with the expectation of timely remuneration as agreed, our clients are yet to receive their monthly stipends from October 2022 to September 2023,” the letter stated.

Adeyanju also described the severe financial challenges now facing the beneficiaries, noting that the stipends were intended to offer vital financial support. “Our clients are currently experiencing significant financial difficulty due to the non-payment of their stipends. As participants in the N-Power programme, they relied on the monthly stipends to provide much needed financial relief and stability,” Adeyanju remarked.

The letter stressed the original purpose of the N-Power programme, designed to reduce economic pressures, promote skill development, and support sustainable livelihoods. Due to this, the petitioners have called for the immediate disbursement of all overdue stipends. “In light of the foregoing, we demand for the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries accrued over the duration of their employment,” the letter read.

The petition concluded with an appeal for action, attaching relevant documents to aid the minister’s review and response. “Kindly find attached the relevant documents for ease of reference,” the letter ended, reinforcing the urgency of the beneficiaries’ request.
