Police Arrests 17-Year-Old Female Student of Imo State University for Faking Her Kidnapping

The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old girl identified as Jesse Chidiebere, a student at Imo State University (IMSU), for faking her own kidnapping and death.

According to a press release issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, Chidiebere was apprehended by the Orji Police Divisional Headquarters on October 26, 2024, at around 10 p.m., following a distress call from concerned citizens who reported her missing. The situation created widespread panic, particularly among her family and the university community.

In the statement, it was revealed that Chidiebere had sent a message from her WhatsApp account claiming she had been abducted and killed. The message urged her family to visit the Orji Police Station to confirm her death, heightening the sense of fear and urgency.

Upon receiving the report, the police immediately launched an investigation. By the next morning, October 27, 2024, Chidiebere was found alive, and it was discovered that she had fabricated the entire incident as a social media prank.

ASP Okoye stated that the police are conducting a thorough investigation to understand her reasons for such a deceptive act. He also confirmed that Chidiebere would face legal consequences for her actions.

In response to the situation, Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, expressed his dismay, labeling the act as reckless and irresponsible. He pointed out that such actions waste valuable resources and create unnecessary public alarm.

Danjuma also called on parents to educate their children on the dangers of engaging in harmful pranks and spreading false information.

He reassured the public that the police command remains dedicated to combating misinformation and ensuring public safety across the state.
