Niger-Delta Leader, Edwin Clark Critizes Tinubu’s Decision to Scrap Ministry of Niger-Delta

Chief Edwin Clark, a distinguished leader from the South-South region and former Federal Commissioner for Information, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to dismantle the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Clark condemned the move, emphasizing that it undermines the progress and peace-building efforts initiated by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. The ministry was created as part of a strategy to address the security challenges in the Niger Delta and to promote regional development.

According to reports by Vanguard, Clark voiced his concerns that the federal government may be diverting funds meant for the South-South region to other development commissions, a move he believes will deprive the Niger Delta of crucial resources needed for its growth. He further argued that there is no valid reason to dissolve the ministry, given its vital role in managing regional affairs and supporting development projects that benefit local communities.

Clark highlighted that many promises made in the past, including commitments to increase revenue allocations and provide additional support for conflict-affected areas, remain unfulfilled. He warned that the dissolution of the ministry could worsen the existing disparities between the Niger Delta and other regions, as the region continues to face significant challenges.

The elder statesman called on the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with Niger Delta leaders to resolve lingering issues and ensure that development efforts in the region are not halted. He stressed the importance of maintaining the ministry to safeguard the interests of the Niger Delta, which has long been a critical region in Nigeria’s economic and political landscape.

Clark also reaffirmed his belief in democratic principles, reminding the government that its primary duty is to serve the people. “We will not allow it to be scrapped,” he asserted, reflecting the resolve of the Niger Delta leaders to protect their region’s interests. He also demanded clarity on the federal government’s plans for managing regional development moving forward, warning that neglecting the needs of local communities could have serious consequences.
