CAF Awards: Nwabali, Onana and Others Nominated for Goalkeeper of the Year

Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali has earned a nomination for the prestigious 2024 CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award, alongside some of Africa’s finest goalkeeping talents.

CAF made the announcement on Thursday through a post on X (formerly Twitter), unveiling a shortlist that features Nwabali among ten elite goalkeepers from across the continent.

This nomination places him in competition with well-established names in African football, such as Yassine Bounou of Morocco, now playing in Saudi Arabia, Egypt’s Mostafa Shobeir, and Senegal’s Djigui Diarra.

Among the other notable contenders is Cameroon’s Andre Onana, currently showcasing his skills in the English Premier League.

The list also highlights seasoned professionals, including Morocco’s Munir El Kajoui, Algeria’s Oussama Benbot, Ivory Coast’s Yahia Fofana, DR Congo’s Lionel Mpasi, and Tunisia’s Amanallah Memmiche. Each of these goalkeepers has shown remarkable ability and consistency throughout the year, making the 2024 edition of this award one of the most fiercely contested in recent memory.

For Nwabali, this nomination is particularly significant, marking a major milestone for Nigerian football. His inclusion places him among a select group of Nigerian goalkeepers who have been recognized for their contributions at the continental level in recent years.

The winner will be announced at the highly anticipated 2024 CAF Awards ceremony, where Africa’s top football talents will be honored for their achievements over the past year.
