A church programme, “Love Feast” held at a white garment church in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals, while several others were hospitalized.
According to Guardian, the unfortunate incident occurred last Sunday at the church premises in Apata, located within Ido Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State.
The affected individuals reportedly became ill after consuming a meal during the gathering, which has since raised concern across the community.
Initial reports indicate that the victims consumed a dish of beans, a common staple food, during the love feast. However, while some individuals experienced severe reactions that led to their deaths, others who ate the same meal remained unaffected. This discrepancy has led to considerable speculation about the true cause of the victims’ death.
Meanwhile, investigations are currently ongoing to determine whether food poisoning was responsible or if other factors contributed to the incident.
Following the alarming sequence of events, the affected individuals who survived but fell seriously ill were immediately rushed to the Infectious Disease Centre located in the Olodo area of Ibadan. Medical personnel at the center have been working diligently to treat the survivors and prevent further casualties.
The health conditions of hospitalized victims are closely being monitored as the healthcare team attempts to stabilize them and identify the source of their illness.
In response to the situation, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation was already ongoing to ascertain the cause of the tragedy.
Authorities are reportedly exploring all possible angles, including food contamination, sabotage, or other external factors that might have led to the deaths and hospitalizations. The police have expressed their commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, working closely with healthcare professionals and possibly toxicologists to ascertain whether the food served during the love feast contained harmful substances.
