Ondo Govt Commences Payment of N133,400 monthly allowance to Corps Members (Medical Doctors)
N10,000 monthly stipend to those serving in MDAs
The Ondo State government has officially commenced the payment of a N133,400 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, following the directive of the Executive Governor, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
According to “nyscupdates.com”, this initiative, which was first announced during the Governor’s visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko in July, marks the restoration of financial support for corps members, particularly those serving in public institutions.
During the Swearing-in Ceremony for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ (Stream 1) corps members deployed to Ondo State, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of the allowance in alleviating the economic challenges facing corps members. He noted that the payments were not only aimed at easing the impact of the current economic situation but also designed to motivate corps members to contribute more effectively to the development of society.
The Governor’s approval for the commencement of this allowance was communicated in a circular from the Office of Establishment and Training, located in the Governor’s Office. The circular, signed by Mrs. R. O. Dare-Atunse, the Permanent Secretary, outlined the specifics of the payment structure. According to the document, NYSC medical doctors serving in the state will receive a monthly allowance of N133,400, while other corps members serving in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government will be entitled to a monthly stipend of N10,000.
This significant development was warmly received by the NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mr. Sam Amaramiro Pepple, who expressed his gratitude to the Governor for the gesture. He noted that the allowances would greatly reduce the financial burdens corps members face during their service year. “This gesture will go a long way to ameliorate the challenges corps members serving in the state are facing,” said Pepple.
In light of this positive development, Mr. Pepple urged all corps members serving in public institutions within Ondo State to step up their efforts and demonstrate their appreciation for the support provided by the Aiyedatiwa administration. He encouraged them to reciprocate the government’s goodwill by offering their best in their various areas of deployment, contributing positively to the state’s development.
Moreover, the NYSC State Coordinator called on other employers of corps members, particularly those in the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, to follow the government’s example. He urged these entities to consider increasing the stipends they pay to corps members, in recognition of the valuable services they render.
It is worth noting that the restoration of corps members’ allowances in Ondo State did not come without concerted efforts. Upon assuming office in April, Mr. Pepple launched a series of advocacy visits aimed at ensuring the resumption of these payments. He engaged various government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and several Honourable Commissioners and Permanent Secretaries. His outreach also extended to key stakeholders and leaders of thought across the state, all of whom were instrumental in securing the Governor’s approval for the payment of the allowances.
This move by the Ondo State government sets a positive precedent for other states in Nigeria, demonstrating a commitment to supporting the welfare of NYSC members while fostering a culture of productivity and community service among the country’s youth.
