The Presidency has urged the 36 State Governors in Nigeria to ensure full implementation of the Supreme Court’s Judgement on financial autonomy to Local Government Councils in the country.
According to Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Nigerian Governors should not see the Supreme Court Judgement granting financial autonomy to Local Councils as affront, rather they should ensure full implementation of the verdict at their states.
Onanuga said, “The Nigerian state governors should not see the Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to the local councils as an affront. It is in their best interest to ensure that the judgment is fully implemented in their domains.”

He noted that, despite the fact that local council is a very important third tier of government, it is being emasculated by the state governors in the last 25 years, and as result of that, poverty and insecurity have continued to thrive all over the country.
“The local council is a very important third tier of government, and its emasculation by the governors in the last 25 years has been at the root of the poverty and insecurity we have all over our country.” Said, Onanuga.
He concluded that, “The governors must allow the councils to breathe and flourish again.”
Recall, on Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court Judgement mandated that all allocations to the local council areas in the country should be disbursed directly to the account of local government administration, and that, democratically elected chairmen should be seeing the affairs of the third tier of government in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, reactions have begun to follow this supreme court’s judgement, some notable Nigerians hailed the apex Court on the verdict while some have expressed their displeasure about the judgment.
