The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Saturday, spearheaded an endurance trek in Akure to commemorate the 2024 World Olympic Day.
The event saw participation from top government officials, athletes, and local residents.
According to The Guardian, the governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, led a 40-minute trek that began at the Government House ground in Alagbaka, continued through Oba Adesida Road, and concluded at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
In a statement released by Deputy Governor spokesman John Paul Akinduro, the governor emphasized his administration’s dedication to revitalizing youth and sports development. He stressed the vital role of sports in fostering national unity.
Akinduro stated, “The contract for the upgrade of Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure has been awarded to a reputable contractor to meet international standards. Other stadia in Ondo, Ikare, and Ile-Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet our needs across the state.”
Furthermore, Governor Aiyedatiwa announced plans to decentralize sporting activities by awarding a contract for a new stadium on Araromi Street in Akure. This initiative aims to alleviate the pressure on the already over-stretched Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development throughout the state.
During his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, highlighted the importance of sustaining such events, noting that sports serve as a powerful tool for promoting global peace. He remarked, “The sustainability of the event was a clear indication that sports is a veritable instrument for the promotion of global peace.”
The representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Sylvester Ikuejamoye, encouraged the community to incorporate regular exercise into their routines to maintain both physical and mental health.
The event also featured notable performances, including a display by three Guinness World Record holders in rope skipping. The event culminated with the presentation of certificates to several distinguished individuals, including the governor, the speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Segun Omojuwa, among others.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has shown a clear commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and opportunities in Ondo State. By investing in the upgrade of sports facilities and the construction of new venues, the government aims to provide athletes with the resources they need to excel and to foster a culture of physical fitness and sportsmanship within the community.
