Building Owner, Child, Four Others Dead As Structure Collapsed

Report has revealed that no fewer than six people, including the building owner, a child and four others, have died following the collapse of a structure in Kano.

The collapse, which took place during heavy morning rainfall, has left eight others injured. These individuals are currently receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Among the injured were construction workers and passersby who had sought shelter from the rain.

Local authorities, including the Ward Head of Dorayi Babba, have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the tragic loss of innocent lives.

The cause of the collapse remains unclear, and the Kano State Hisbah Command has confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

In a related incident, a tragedy occurred on Friday in Imawa town, Kura Local Government area of Kano State, along the Zaria-Kano highway.

A moving truck lost control and killed at least 14 worshippers. Reports indicate that the incident happened as the truck ran into worshippers returning from the Juma’at mosque after observing the two rakat Friday prayers.

The Kano Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, CC Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the incident to newsmen, stating that several other individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In a statement by his spokesperson, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, the Sector Commander said preliminary reports showed that the truck, with registration number MKA 537 XN, lost control and collided with pedestrians who had just concluded observing Friday prayers.

The Sector Commander noted that efforts were ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

CC Abdullahi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the corps’ commitment to road safety, urging all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

Residents have called for an immediate review of construction standards and safety protocols to prevent such disasters in the future. There is a growing demand for accountability, with many questioning the quality of materials used and the oversight provided during the construction process. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about building safety and regulation in Kano State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has intensified its road safety campaigns in the wake of the accident, emphasizing the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits.

Public awareness programs are being rolled out to educate drivers and pedestrians about road safety measures. The aim is to reduce the incidence of road accidents and enhance overall safety on the highways.
