The Senate of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has appointed Aisha Maikudi, a 41-year-old Professor of Law, as the institution’s acting Vice Chancellor. This notable appointment makes Maikudi not only the acting Vice Chancellor but also marks her as the youngest professor of law in Nigeria.
Professor Maikudi, who specializes in International Law, was serving as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) before her new appointment. Her nomination was announced during a valedictory Senate meeting held on Wednesday, as stated by the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah. Maikudi will hold the acting Vice Chancellor position pending ratification by the Governing Council.
In her acceptance speech, Professor Maikudi expressed profound gratitude, saying, “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me.”
Born on January 31, 1983, Maikudi’s educational journey began at Queens College, Lagos, where she earned her West African Senior School Certificate. She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 2004. Subsequently, she pursued a Master of Laws (LLM) at the London School of Economics & Political Science, graduating in 2005. In 2015, she obtained a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja.
Maikudi began her academic career at the University of Abuja on September 4, 2008, when she was appointed as a Lecturer II. Her dedication and excellence in academia were recognized when she was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2022.
Throughout her tenure at the University of Abuja, Professor Maikudi has made significant contributions to the institution. In 2018, she became the first female Deputy Dean at the university’s Faculty of Law. She also played a pioneering role as the Director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.
