Modupe Ayandare, a 500-level Agronomy student from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, was found dead on Monday.
Her body was discovered hanging near the university’s campus, close to her off-campus church.
The unfortunate event was confirmed by the University’s Students Union Government (SUG). Olaogbebikan Noble, the Public Relations Officer for the SUG, spoke to journalists, expressing the union’s deep sorrow over the loss of Ayandare. Noble emphasized the union’s commitment to uncovering the reasons behind her tragic decision.
The statement released by the union conveyed profound sadness at Ayandare’s passing, which reportedly happened around 4 a.m. after she had attended a church vigil. The union reassured the university community that law enforcement agencies are actively involved, and a thorough investigation is already in progress. They also encouraged anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Students’ Union to aid in the investigation.
In addition to the SUG’s statement, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the state police spokesperson, confirmed the incident to Punch News. She indicated that the police have started their investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding Ayandare’s death.
“Yes, we got the information. And the police are working very hard to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.”She said.
The university community has been plunged into mourning, with students and staff expressing their shock and grief over the loss of a promising young life. Ayandare was described by her peers as a dedicated and hardworking student, making the news of her death even more heart-wrenching.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation about mental health and the pressures faced by students in higher education institutions. The university administration and the SUG have both stressed the importance of mental health support and are urging students to seek help when dealing with personal challenges.
As the investigation continues, there is a collective call for compassion and support within the university community. The tragic loss of Modupe Ayandare serves as a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for accessible support systems for students.
In response to this tragedy, the Students Union has pledged to organize more mental health awareness programs and ensure that students have access to the resources they need. They have also called on the university administration to enhance existing mental health services and make them more accessible to students.
The death of Modupe Ayandare is a deeply felt loss, not only to her immediate family and friends but to the entire AAUA community. As investigations proceed, the hope is that greater awareness and preventative measures will emerge to support students facing similar struggles.
