Labour Must Reject N60k Slave Wage, Sowore Urges Labour

The Ondo State born human rights activist and presidential candidate of African Alliance Congress (AAC) during the 2023 general election, Omoyele Sowore, has urged the leadership of the Labour Unions not to back down on their demand for new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Sowore took to his social media (X) handle to make this known, stating that, Organised Labour must outrightly reject the N60k slave wage.

Sowore said, “I am urging the leadership of the labour unions @NLCHeadquarters and @The_TUC not to back down; they MUST reject the N60k slave wage being proposed by the Tinubu regime.

“The time for Nigerian workers’ total struggle for a living wage is NOW! #RevolutionNow.”

Recall, following the meeting of the Organised Labour with Federal Government on Monday, the Labour suspended its ongoing nationwide industrial action in order to enable them go back to negotiation table as government assured that President Tinubu is committed to approve minimum wage that is above N60,000, which the Unions had earlier rejected.

Meanwhile, the federal government has offered N62,000 as new minimum wage to Organised Labour, but the leadership of the Labour has rejected the government’s offer, insisting that, the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers should be pegged N250,000, so that they would be able to meet the present economic challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.

However, the federal government has appealed to Organised Labour to accept what the government can afford to pay, stating that, Labour’ demand will grounded the government’s financial capacity.

Furthermore, federal government added that the private sector needed to be put into consideration as far as national minimum wage is concerned.

Recall, the private sector is represented in tripartite committee constituted by the federal government, and at same time, agreed with government’s N62,000 national minimum wage.
