I shall continue to sing Arise O Compatriots.
The former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has taken to her official X handle to react as the popular female human rights activist and strong supporter of Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, dishonored the national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” which was signed into law recently by President Bola Tinubu.
Ezekwesili said, whenever and wherever the National Anthem is called for, she would continue to sing Arise O Compatriots, instead of “Nigeria We Hail Thee.”
Ezekwesili wrote, “@AishaYesufu, Definitely #NotMyNationalAnthem as I already publicly conveyed.
“In my case, whenever and wherever the National Anthem is called for, I shall continue to sing #AriseOCompatriots #MyNationalAnthem.”
She added that, “The Lawmakers @nassnigeria and @NGRPresident grievously breached the constitutional provisions and progress for amendment of legislation and therefore cannot foist another National Anthem on us.
“I refuse to join them in the kangaroo Act of violating the constitution.
“Nigeria is a Constitutional Democracy and must be so governed.”
Recall, few days ago, the National Assembly passed the old national anthem, “Nigeria Will Hail Thee,” into law, jettisoned the current national anthem, “Arise O Compatriots,” and subsequently, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed into law the bill re-introducing the old national anthem.
Meanwhile, since the old national anthem was re-introduced, some Nigerians have begun to react either in support or against the decision of President Tinubu’s led federal government, Aisha Yesufu and Oby Ezekwesili are among those who stood against the re-introduction of the old national anthem.
Meanwhile, several loyalists of President Bola Tinubu have continued to sing praises of Mr President for signing into law, the bill re-introducing the old national anthem, “Nigeria Will Hail Thee,” reiterating the fact that, the old national anthem, is the best anthem for the nation because it takes into cognisance the onenes of the diversity of the ethnicities in country.
